What is the difference between the Android Tablets for $100 and the Ipads for $499?

They have these Android Tablets on sale for Black Riday under $100 and my daughter has been asking for a Ipad which I can’t afford, but the Android Tablet says that U can search the web,play music,videos,games etc.

There is some difference and usually apple products have or atleast the reputation of more polish to the product attention to detail compared to the droid brethren. This isn’t to say Android Tabs are bad with lots of different tabs coming out and matching or beating the iPad in some or all areas and constantly improving software. It is just you would need to check specs and state which android tabs your looking at as some are not up to scratch compared to the iPad.
As far as similar spec SONY S, Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Eee Pad, MOTOROLA Xoom, HTC Flyer, LG Optimus Pad are all very familiar to the iPad but not one and have all the features.
And if worse comes to worse you could always find student friend and get a lovely 14% discount >_>

The main difference would be screen sizes Operating systems and features like sd card and micro hdmi…. Ipads are known for there simplicity.. Most people can pick them up and play with them. My friends 2 year old son can turn it on, unlock it, and play with it. Android has alot of extra features like MicroSD for additional space, Widescreen format(Motorola Xoom), Very customizeable(Ipads are customizable but in my opinion no where near as customizeable as Andriod), and micro hdmi out for hd tvs. I would suggest going to best buy and playing with a Motorola Xoom tablet or Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet and see how you like android. After that walk over to the Apple section and play with an Ipad 2. See which one you enjoy more…

Do all Android Tablets need data plan?

I’m looking to buy my wife an android tablet but don’t want to sign a contract or get a data plan. Just need one that works off WiFi. Which pad would you recommend, and needs to be released already its going to be a Christmas present.

Absolutely not. And even if they have 3G, you don’t need to have a dataplan to use it. If you want of course, you should. I have a virgin mobile 3G stick, and pay by the month, $30.00 for 6GB, and if I don’t want it for a few months, I stop the billing on it, and turn it back on when I want. but you don’t need to have a data plan, and if it will be used mostly at home or in places where there is Wifi, then you don’t need a dataplan anyway. I use my 10.2″ android tablet pc mostly at home and at lunch at work, and there’s wifi in both places, so I don’t have to have a data plan at all. I only have it in case I want to be able to use it. Android 3.0 Tablets in 2011

Earlier this month, Google revealed an upcoming Motorola tablet, a potential competitor of the iPad, which is likely to be powered by a processor more powerful than Apple?s A4. The tablet will run the Android 3.0 (Honeycomb?) OS, which is fully optimized for tablets.

The user interface is also somewhat unique for a tablet, the Motorola tablet doesn?t feature any physical button. Unlike the iPad, which uses a single physical “home” button, the Motorola tablet will use virtual buttons that can adjust themselves as the device is rotated. Unfortunately, Rubin wasn?t too forthcoming about the technical specs and he only hinted that the tablet won?t due out for a while. The tablet will use an unconfirmed Nvidia processor, but if the Motorola tablet uses the dual-core Tegra 250, it will become more powerful than the iPad in terms of raw processing power and 3D graphic performance. The Tegra 250 sports dual ARM Cortex A9 cores which can run for up to 1 GHz each. The platform can support either 512 or 1GB of memory.

Acer, in other hand, has postponed its Android tablet. At first, it planned to modify a 2.x Android to work on its tablet. Obviously, the decision to delay the release in favor of the Honeycomb is a good idea as the new Android version is fully optimized to run on a tablet. The option to wait for Honeycomb will also save Acer a lot of headache and hassles, because converting a smartphone OS to run on a tablet may not be an easy matter. Unfortunately, it will also mean that Acer?s tablet will lose its head start in introducing an Android tablet.

Motorola and Acer are not the only manufacturers to release Android 3.0 tablets. It is expected that a whole bunch of Honeycomb tablets will be physically showcased at CES 2011, even so we should expect some tablets that will also run the lesser Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Android 3.0 will not only available on tablets, some manufacturers have announced the upcoming Android 3.0 smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S2 is expected to have Honeycomb as its operating system, while Google will also release Nexus Two that uses Honeycomb. The PSP Phone may also be powered by Android 3.0. Details on the Android 3.0 itself are still scant, but it is safe to surmise that the Honeycomb will be developed upon the Android 2.3 platform, along with enhancements that emulate some features found in Apple?s iOS 4.2.

Why some android tablets get updates and some don’t?

Some tablets get android updates and some not? And some get sooner and some later? Isn’t it the same OS? I thought they would all get the update.
Can someone explain to me?

Hi,

this has 2 main reasons:

first of all, the company that made the tablets will most likely have changed the default google update repository to one of their own repositories. This is mostly due to compatibility reasons, or some shell-software they’ve written around the android subsystem. Since the market evolves very fast, the like hood of an older, Non-Google phone receiving updates will be slim.

Second reason, this may be applicable to non-Google phones too, is that if every android-system would be allowed to update at the same time, changes are that the google-farm will crash like an airplane flown by a duck… so what they do is dividing the world in update-regions. And so, from time to time you can receive major updates.

So yes, they’re all based upon android, created by google (fyi on top of a linux-kernel), but probably altered by the manufacturer. The (HTC) Nexus One, (Samsung) Nexus S and (Samsung) Galaxy Nexus are examples of pure google phones that rely only on google for their updates. So these will have the longest update-life-expectancy.
